Beffective helped clinicians through the classic five stages of data grief commonly seen, and helped them use the data to focus their teams on the most relevant data in the most effective manner.
So much data can have clinicians and leaders unsure where to start and may result in individuals all trying to do different things, diluting the focus and energy of the team. Many leaders are confused when shown a distribution curve showing performance and costs associated as to where to start.
Should they focus on lowest performance? Or go with the top performers to model the behaviour required. We at Beffective believe you should focus on trying to move the middle but engaging the whole team in how they can all improve individual performance. If you can move the mid point then it becomes about getting better rather than arguing about who is a good performer or who had the most complicated case etc.
Working with teams this way and helping them to focus has enabled the tool to be seen in a positive light and resulted in teams identifying new practices that are having significant impact on patient outcomes and organisational performance.
When fully implemented PLICS will bring a level of insight into healthcare never seen before. This additional level of insight will help individuals and teams to make clinical decisions that should improve patient outcomes and inturn have a positive impact on the financial position of the organisation.
To achieve these outcomes several factors have to be overcome and delivered on. Firstly clinicians have to be engaged at an early stage in the development of the tool to make sure the data is correct and communicated in a manner that is appropriate and useful.
Finance teams can do much of this work without the full scale engagement of clinicians, needing only a few to build the structures and determine the effectiveness of the tool and the data.
Tools only come alive when they are given to people capable of wielding them.
5 Stages of Data Grief
- The data is wrong
- It does not apply to me
- I will get the correct data
- There’s nothing I can do about it
- Acceptance and Action
At Beffective we spend time with clinicians working through the challenges to engagement and adoption of the system.
